When Inspiration Strikes
A new stitching adventure begins
After discussing so much sewing history over the last few months, I’m ready to put that inspiration into practice with some stitching of my own.
I was in awe when I first discovered Victorian sample books. Beautiful works of textile history that showcase the talents and skills of the era’s seamstresses, simple collections filled with amazing examples of hand-stitched seams, hems, buttonholes and so much more.
I’ve decided to create my own version using these original books as inspiration. I won’t be following them exactly; I’ll be guided by the originals and use my own creativity to see what unfolds.
In complete contrast to the more formal sample books, I also wish to create a very modern, freeform, patchwork book. I am inspired by Jo Avery’s fabric book collection, as well as the improvised patchwork techniques of Nicholas Ball.
I can’t think of two more different projects, and I’m excited to begin.
For those of you who would like to follow along, I’ll be sharing my general progress and inspiration over on Patreon, and members of The Patchwork tier will be able to follow along more closely - with detailed posts, reflections and behind-the-scenes glimpses as each piece takes shape.
If you are inspired to stitch a fabric book of your own, I’d love to hear about it.

I’m sure they will be brilliant! It’ll be exciting to see how they develop. In the usual Gaynor-style I am sure!
What lovely projects!
